Georgia in winter is a different country from the one most tourists see. The ski resorts are full, Tbilisi is quiet and walkable, and the mountain landscapes are at their most dramatic. It is also the season where the gap between prepared and unprepared drivers is most visible — and where the right vehicle choice matters most.
This guide covers winter road conditions across Georgia, which routes are safe in which vehicles, and what to check before you drive.
Georgia's geography creates completely different winter conditions depending on where you are.
Tbilisi and the eastern lowlands have mild winters by Caucasus standards. Snow falls several times per season but rarely settles for long in the city. Roads are generally clear. Driving in Tbilisi in winter is not significantly different from driving in autumn.
The central highway routes — E60 between Tbilisi and Kutaisi, the main road to Batumi — are kept clear and salted in winter. Occasional icy patches occur in the early morning. Standard winter awareness applies.
Mountain routes are where conditions change fundamentally. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, the road to Gudauri, the approach to Mestia, and the Goderdzi Pass all see heavy snowfall from November through March. These routes require winter tyres as a minimum — and in many cases a 4x4 with chains.
High mountain routes — Ushguli, Omalo, the Abano Pass to Tusheti — are effectively inaccessible in winter without specialised equipment and experience. These are not routes for rental cars in the off-season.
All StarCar vehicles are fitted with winter tyres from November through March. You do not need to request this — it is standard for the season.
For SUV and 4x4 models, snow chains are available on request. If your itinerary includes mountain routes in winter, confirm chain availability when booking via WhatsApp.
The vehicle you need depends on your route — not on the season alone. A sedan with winter tyres handles Tbilisi and the main highways in winter without difficulty. The upgrade to a crossover or SUV is necessary when you leave the main roads.
Winter driving in Tbilisi is manageable. The city's road network is salted after snowfall and conditions normalise quickly. Tbilisi's hills — particularly in the old town — can be icy after overnight freezing. Drive carefully on steep cobbled streets.
A sedan is sufficient for Tbilisi city driving in winter.
The E60 is Georgia's main highway and is maintained year-round. In heavy snowfall it may slow to one lane in sections, but it is rarely closed. Normal winter driving caution applies — reduce speed in poor visibility, allow extra braking distance.
A sedan handles this route in winter without difficulty.
This is the route where winter conditions become serious. The road climbs to the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres before descending to Kazbegi. In winter the pass section is frequently snow-covered and icy. The road is kept open but conditions vary significantly day to day.
A crossover with winter tyres is the minimum for this route in winter. An SUV with chains is strongly recommended after heavy snowfall. Check conditions before departure — the operator can advise on current status.
Gudauri ski resort is on this road at 2,200 metres. The access road to the resort is cleared regularly during ski season, but the main pass above it can be unpredictable.
The direct E60 route to Batumi is maintained in winter and generally passable. The scenic route via Goderdzi Pass is a different matter — the pass reaches 2,025 metres and is frequently closed in winter or requires a 4x4 with chains. Do not attempt Goderdzi in winter without current information on conditions and an appropriate vehicle.
Kutaisi sits at around 125 metres altitude and has mild winters. The city and its surroundings — Prometheus Cave, Gelati, Sataplia — are accessible year-round without difficulty. A sedan is sufficient.
The road to Mestia is kept open in winter but is demanding. Snow and ice on the approach road through the Enguri Gorge are common from December through February. A 4x4 SUV is required for winter driving to Mestia. The road beyond Mestia to Ushguli is not reliably passable in winter — do not plan this route between November and April.
Both major Georgian ski resorts are accessible in winter with the right vehicle. Gudauri's access road is cleared regularly during ski season. Bakuriani is reached from Borjomi on a paved road that is maintained but can be icy.
A crossover handles both resort access roads in normal winter conditions. After heavy snowfall, an SUV with chains is preferable.

| Goderdzi Pass | 4x4 SUV | Often closed — check before travelling |

Speed and braking: Winter tyres significantly improve grip but do not eliminate stopping distance on ice. Reduce speed on mountain descents and allow much more braking distance than you would in summer.
Descents: On steep mountain roads in winter, use engine braking — lower gears — rather than riding the foot brake. This is particularly important on the Kazbegi road and the approach to Mestia.
Visibility: Mountain weather changes quickly in Georgia. Cloud, fog, and driving snow can reduce visibility to near zero on exposed sections. If conditions deteriorate significantly, stop and wait — most weather windows pass within an hour or two.
Check conditions before departing: The operator can advise on current road conditions for your specific route. Use this — it takes two minutes via WhatsApp and can save you significant difficulty.
Fuel: Fill up before entering mountain areas in winter. Petrol stations are less frequent on mountain routes and some smaller stations close in the off-season.
Inform the operator of your route: If you are planning mountain driving in winter, tell the operator at booking. They can confirm vehicle suitability, chain availability, and current conditions.
StarCar applies a 20% seasonal discount in winter relative to peak summer rates. This makes winter one of the most cost-effective times to rent — particularly for ski trips to Gudauri or Bakuriani, where you can combine a lower rental rate with off-peak accommodation prices.
