Tbilisi to Kazbegi & Back: Road Trip Planning Guide (2026)

The drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi is the most iconic road trip in Georgia. 150 km north on the Georgian Military Highway, through the Caucasus foothills, past a reservoir, over a 2,379-metre pass, and down into a valley with a 5,047-metre volcano at the end of it. Most people do it as a long day trip. Done properly, it deserves two days minimum.

This guide covers the full route — what to stop at, what car to take, how to get to Gergeti Trinity Church, and what most day-trippers miss.

The Route: Tbilisi to Kazbegi on the Georgian Military Highway

The Georgian Military Highway (S3) runs north from Tbilisi through Mtskheta, up the Aragvi River valley, past the Zhinvali Reservoir, through Gudauri ski resort, over the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres, and down to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) at 1,750 metres. Total distance from Tbilisi city centre to Kazbegi is approximately 150 km. Drive time without stops is around 2.5 hours.

The road is paved throughout and well-maintained. It is one of the best-quality mountain roads in Georgia. In summer and autumn it is straightforward in any vehicle. In winter the Jvari Pass section requires winter tyres and demands respect — conditions change quickly at altitude.

Stops on the Way North

Mtskheta (20 km from Tbilisi, 30 minutes)

The ancient capital of Georgia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have not visited before, allow an hour. Jvari Monastery sits on the ridge above town with a view over the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers — one of the most photographed spots in Georgia. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is in the town centre, a living 11th-century church.

If you have already visited Mtskheta, it is fine to drive through. The monastery is visible from the highway and the view from the road is almost as good.

Zhinvali Reservoir (60 km from Tbilisi, 1 hour)

The road opens up at the Zhinvali Reservoir — a large artificial lake in the Aragvi valley with good views in both directions on a clear day. There is no formal stopping point but the road follows the lakeshore for several kilometres. Pull over where it is safe.

Ananuri Fortress (75 km from Tbilisi, 1 hour 10 minutes)

One of the best stops on the highway. A 17th-century fortress complex directly on the reservoir shore — two churches, a watchtower, and crenellated walls, all intact and free to enter. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. The cafe at the fortress entrance is a reasonable place for coffee before continuing north.

Gudauri (120 km from Tbilisi, 1 hour 50 minutes)

Georgia's main ski resort sits at 2,200 metres on the plateau above the Jvari Pass. In winter it is a destination in itself. In summer the ski lifts run for hikers and the plateau views across the Greater Caucasus are exceptional. The paragliding launch site above the resort attracts a crowd in good weather. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you want to stop.

The road from Gudauri to the Jvari Pass is the most demanding section — steep, exposed, and subject to fast-moving weather. In winter, check conditions before this section. In summer it is straightforward.

Jvari Pass (2,379 metres)

The high point of the highway. On a clear day the views north into the Caucasus and south back toward the plateau are exceptional. In cloud — which is common — you see nothing and the road is wet and cold. Either way, the descent north to Kazbegi begins here and the landscape changes completely as you drop toward the valley.

Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): What to Do

Gergeti Trinity Church

The church on the ridge above Kazbegi with Mount Kazbek directly behind it is the image most associated with Georgia internationally. At 2,170 metres, it is around 400 metres above the town. There are two ways to reach it.

On foot: The path from town is steep and takes 1.5 to 2 hours one way. It is well-marked and well-used. Wear appropriate footwear — the path is rocky in the upper section. In good weather the hike is worthwhile. Allow 3 to 4 hours return with time at the top.

By 4x4: A rough track from town leads up to the church. Local drivers offer the service in Kazbegi town. If you have rented an SUV, the operator can advise on whether the track is suitable for your vehicle — it is steep and rocky and not appropriate for standard cars or crossovers. Do not attempt it in a sedan.

Kazbegi Town

The town itself is small — a grid of streets, a handful of restaurants and guesthouses, and a good view of the church ridge from almost anywhere. The Stepantsminda Hotel and several guesthouses have terraces with direct views of Mount Kazbek on clear mornings. Clear mornings are not guaranteed.

Truso Valley

A day hike or drive from Kazbegi toward the Georgian-Russian border through a landscape of mineral springs, ruined villages, and the Terek River gorge. The road into Truso Valley is unpaved and requires an SUV. Check with the operator before attempting it. The hike (if you park at the valley entrance and walk) is straightforward and takes around 4 hours return to the main viewpoints.

What Car Do You Need?

For the Main Route (Tbilisi to Kazbegi, Gergeti on foot)

Any vehicle in the fleet handles the Georgian Military Highway without difficulty in good conditions. A sedan is sufficient for the standard Tbilisi–Kazbegi day trip or overnight. The road is paved throughout and well-maintained.

For the Gergeti Track or Truso Valley

A 4x4 SUV is required for the track to Gergeti Trinity Church and for driving into Truso Valley. These are unpaved mountain tracks with significant gradient and rough surface. Do not attempt either in a sedan or standard crossover.

If your plan includes both the main highway drive and off-track excursions above Kazbegi, book an SUV. If you are sticking to the highway and hiking to Gergeti, a sedan or crossover works.

Day Trip vs Overnight: Which Is Better?

Day Trip (Tbilisi Base)

A day trip to Kazbegi is entirely feasible — leave Tbilisi at 7am, reach Kazbegi by 10am, hike to Gergeti (or take a 4x4), have lunch in town, and return to Tbilisi by early evening. Total driving is around 5 hours. It is a long day.

The problem with a day trip is Mount Kazbek. The mountain is frequently cloud-covered by midday in summer. The best views — and the best light on Gergeti Trinity Church — are in the early morning. A day tripper arriving at 10am often sees cloud where there should be a mountain. An overnight guest wakes up at 6am to clear skies.

Overnight (Kazbegi Base)

One night in Kazbegi changes the experience completely. You have the morning light, the evening quiet after day-trippers leave, and the option of a second full day for Truso Valley or further hiking. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses to the larger Rooms Hotel Kazbegi — book well in advance in summer.

Seasonal Conditions

Summer (June–September) is peak season. The road is clear, the hike to Gergeti is busy, and Kazbegi fills up at weekends. Book accommodation ahead. The mountain is frequently cloud-covered by midday.

Spring (April–May) brings clearer skies, fewer tourists, and a 15% discount on car rental rates. Snow can remain on the Jvari Pass section into April — check conditions before travelling.

Autumn (September–October) is arguably the best time. Stable weather, good visibility, autumn colour on the lower slopes, 15% off peak rental rates, and significantly fewer tourists than summer.

Winter (November–March) — the road to Kazbegi is kept open but the Jvari Pass is demanding in snow and ice. A crossover with winter tyres is the minimum. Conditions change quickly. Check before departing and do not attempt the pass in poor visibility without experience. A 20% winter discount applies on car rental.

Practical Notes

  • Fuel: Fill up in Tbilisi before departing. There is one petrol station in Kazbegi town — do not rely on it being open late or having the fuel type you need.
  • Mobile coverage: Good from Tbilisi to Kazbegi on the main highway. Coverage drops in Truso Valley and on some hiking routes above town.
  • Weather: Check the forecast specifically for Kazbegi, not Tbilisi — the two can be completely different. Mountain weather apps (Mountain Forecast, Windy) are more accurate than general weather apps for the pass section.
  • Accommodation: Book ahead in summer. Kazbegi has limited beds and fills up on weekend nights from June to September.
  • Cash: Carry cash in Kazbegi — not all guesthouses and restaurants accept card.

Suggested Itineraries

One Day from Tbilisi

Depart 7am. Stop at Ananuri (45 minutes). Continue to Gudauri viewpoint (20 minutes). Arrive Kazbegi by 10:30am. Hike to Gergeti Trinity Church (3 to 4 hours return). Lunch in town. Depart by 3pm. Back in Tbilisi by 6pm.

Two Days

Day one: Tbilisi to Kazbegi with stops at Mtskheta, Ananuri, and Gudauri. Afternoon hike or rest in town. Overnight in Kazbegi.

Day two: Early morning at Gergeti with clear views of Kazbek. Truso Valley drive or hike (SUV required for driving, crossover or sedan for parking and walking). Return to Tbilisi or continue to Kakheti.

Three Days (Extended)

Add a night in Gudauri on the way up or down. In winter this combines ski days with the Kazbegi experience. In summer, the plateau hiking above Gudauri is genuinely excellent and largely crowd-free.
